CASE STUDY
Role & Scope
Concept development, layout, typography, illustration, and print mockups.
The Challenge
Many classic sci-fi and literary covers lean heavily on literal imagery or generic genre styling. Vonnegut’s writing is anything but generic—it’s dark, playful, chaotic, and philosophical. This redesign aimed to create covers that reflect the complexity and absurdity of his work without relying on cliché.
Big Idea
Each cover leans into the surreal, nonlinear style of Vonnegut’s narratives by blending expressive typography, gritty textures, and minimal but symbolic imagery. The goal was to make the reader feel the tone of the story before even opening the book.
Final Outcome
The result is a cohesive yet distinct set of covers that feel both vintage and experimental, channeling Vonnegut’s voice through a visual language that resonates with readers who appreciate design with a sense of personality, irony, and bite.
Takeaways
This project pushed me to trust abstraction as a storytelling tool and think critically about how visual tone can match literary tone. It deepened my interest in designing for publishing, music, and merchandise—spaces where emotion, identity, and narrative intersect.
